There are four most important antarctic explorers was Roald Amundsen,Sir Ernest shackleton,Robert Falcon Scott ,and Richard E. Byrd In December 1911, Roald Amundsen held his first trip to the South Pole (1872-1928).Roald Amundsen was a Norwegian scientist. He was the very first scientist to make back home. Most of the scientist would not make it back, they wouldn’t survive there trip back home.It was very suprising that people made it back to their homes. The next explorer,Robert Falcon Scott (1868-1957), and Roald Amundsen were racing to Antarctica. Both teams started at different places and got there at different times. The very first one to get there was Roald Amundsen, and a couple of weeks later, Robert Falcon Scott got there. Scott’s and his crew died on their way back to their ship because instead of wearing heavy down parkas, they were wearing wool instead. Roald and his team was wearing heavy down parkas and made it back to their homes. It was a very long and tiring journey. It almost took 2 years to do it. They were traveling on foot, by sled, and in their ships for over 2000 miles! There is another very famous explorer, Richard E. Byrd (1867-1957). He was the very first to succesfully fly over the South Pole. Richard E. Byrd was an american explorer. There is a part of the South Pole named after his wife, Marie Byrd,. The land was called “Marie Byrd Land”. Maybe the most famous explorer of them all is Sir Ernest Shackleton (1874-1922). When he went to Antarctica for the very first time in 1901-1902 with Robert Falcon Scott, barely no one had gone there before. He decided to make another trip to antarctica 1907-1909. In 1914, Sir Ernest Shackleton prepared a third trip to Antarctica. His ship was the Endurance. The Endurance got stuck in the ice in 1915. This forced Shackleton and his crew to abandon the ship. Finally, Sir Ernest Shackleton organised three teams to go in three rowboats. In order to rescue his men, Sir Ernest Shackleton rowed 800 miles to South Georgia Island and got help there. He managed to get everyone on his ship back safely to England.
